Digital Media (moving image)

Anja Stöffler has been teaching Digital Media at the Media Design department of Mainz University of Applied Sciences since 2001.

Currently she is the co-team leader of the Institute for Media Design. She researches, curates and realizes projects for museums and for the film and media industry.

Before she was summoned to Mainz, the studied communication designer worked in leading positions for renowned television stations such as Arte, RTL and ZDF. She was also Experience Network Lead at Razorfish Frankfurt.

In teaching and research, her focus is on applied and experimental design solutions involving moving images and motion design for different output media and sizes. Research also in the field of dynamic typography. Realization of interactive VR experiments including world texts immersive / Panta Rhei.

Together with Prof. Ralf Dringenberg, Anja Stöffler heads the z zg – Centre for Time-Based Design, which she co-founded in 2010 at what is now Mainz University of Applied Sciences and the University of Applied Sciences for Design Schwäbisch Gmünd. Visible and tangible results of this work are the probably unique archive Moving Types – Time-Based Typography with more than 800 visual examples of animated fonts and letters, the multimedia touring exhibition “Moving Types – Letters in Motion”, which has already won several awards, as well as several highly regarded interactive media facades. Archive, exhibition and facades are more than just compilational and technical implementations of knowledge. In them, the findings of research itself are also used directly in the process of editing and communicating. Above all, exhibitions and facades are “living” examples of a new spatial form of the Internet, social media and social networking into a new third dimension. They thus vividly reflect the spirit of the times and the media world as well as their changes in our time and with a view to the future. Anja Stöffler sees her own core competence in this form of processing, communicating and helping to shape this new dimension(s).

In 2013 the International Moving-Types Festival ‘MOTYF’ was founded, which since then has taken place in biennial rhythm at various international locations. 2016 Anja Stöffler was responsible for the international media festival with congress, workshops and exhibition ‘Akademos. A Place for Poets and Philosophers’ at the Gutenberg Museum, Mainz.

From 2010 to 2014 she was head of the study program Media Design (Time-based Design) in Mainz with the core competencies “Film/Video, Interaction and 2d/3d-animation”. During this time the course was expanded and the number of students doubled.

She is also responsible for collaborations with the Gutenberg Museum, Kunsthalle Mainz, Künstlerhaus Edenkoben, Haus des Erinnerns and the Second German Television.
