Applied research and development for the technical advancement of our media for the enrichment of individual and social human communication – that is our goal.
The Institute for Media Design is a research institution of the Department of Design at the University of Applied Sciences Mainz. We develop and implement projects with partners from public institutions and industry. Current information will be published regularly in the UPDATE newsletter in the future. Closely interwoven with the Institute are the courses of study Time-Based Media BA/MA at Mainz University of Applied Sciences. The close interaction between the training in the course of studies and the scientific project work are essential characteristics of the cooperation.
The three main focuses ‘Research’, ‘Development’ and ‘Support of Teaching’ describe the institute’s multifaceted areas of activity. Research is of central importance: The results and experiences of the research work flow into the practical projects of the institute as well as into teaching. They form the basis of the consulting services offered by the Institute and are presented in events such as public lecture series, scientific symposia, exhibitions and publications. The aim of img is to make research results visible and introduce them into the social discourse.

Mainz University of Applied Sciences is a member of the Mainzer Wirtschaftsallianz and is listed on the research map of the HRK University Rectors’ Conference with the focus on communication and media.
The img – Institute for Media Design, together with the Mainz Center for Digitality in the Humanities and Cultural Studies, mainzed and the IDG – Institute Designlabor Gutenberg, forms the profile area Information Technologies in the Humanities, Design and Media at Mainz University of Applied Sciences.
